How to Verify a Chinese Supplier Before You Pay: A Practical Guide

Every year, thousands of businesses wire money to Chinese suppliers they have never visited, based on an Alibaba listing and a WeChat conversation. Most of the time, goods arrive roughly as expected. Sometimes, they do not arrive at all.

The risk is not that most suppliers are fraudulent. The majority are legitimate. The risk is that the financial consequences of the exception are severe enough to justify verification on every first-time order above a meaningful threshold.

What you can verify yourself

Check business registration. Every legitimate Chinese company has a business license. Ask for the license number and verify it through China’s National Enterprise Credit Information system. The registration should match the company name and address provided.

Verify the factory address. Look up the address on Baidu Maps satellite view. Does it correspond to an industrial area with factory buildings, or a residential neighborhood? This takes 5 minutes and filters immediately.

Request and evaluate samples. Order actual production samples, not marketing samples. Pay full price. Evaluate against your specifications: dimensions, material, finish, packaging, labeling.

Check payment account details. The bank account should match the registered business name. Personal accounts, different company names, or offshore entities are stop signals.

Five red flags that should stop a payment

1. Prices significantly below market. If the quote is 30-40% below every other quote for the same product, the explanation is rarely efficiency.
2. Pressure to pay urgently. Legitimate suppliers do not pressure you to wire within hours. Pressure prevents due diligence.
3. Resistance to video verification. A real manufacturer is proud of their facility. Resistance to showing it is a significant red flag.
4. No physical address or inconsistent details. If address, business name, and bank details do not align, the supplier is misrepresenting themselves.
5. Communication only through personal accounts. No company email, no website, no verifiable business identity.

When to use professional on-ground verification

For first orders above 25,000 AED, suppliers you cannot verify independently, and high-stakes product categories where quality failures have safety consequences.
