Air Cargo vs Sea Freight from China: Which Should Your Business Choose?
September 5, 2026 ·
Every business importing from China faces this decision on every shipment: air or sea? The answer seems simple: air is fast, sea is cheap. But the real calculation is more nuanced. The right choice depends on what you are shipping, how urgently you need it, what it is worth, and how often you import.
Transit time: the headline difference
Air cargo: 3-7 working days from your supplier’s factory in China to your door in the UAE or India. This includes pickup, airport processing, the flight, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery.
Sea freight LCL: 25-35 days. Your cargo shares container space with other shippers. The range reflects consolidation wait time, sailing schedules, and port congestion.
Sea freight FCL: 22-30 days. Dedicated container. Generally faster than LCL because there is no consolidation wait.
Add 2-4 days for customs clearance at destination, plus 1-2 days for last-mile delivery.
Cost: the real comparison
Air cargo is priced per kilogram. Sea freight is priced per cubic meter or per container. Direct comparison requires calculating the total landed cost of your specific shipment by both modes.
Rough benchmarks for the China-to-UAE corridor: air cargo runs approximately 18-30 AED per kilogram. Sea LCL runs approximately 800-1,500 AED per CBM. Sea FCL (20-foot container) runs approximately 5,000-9,000 AED per container.
The crossover point where sea becomes cheaper than air typically occurs around 2-3 CBM or 300-500 kg. Below that, air is often comparable in cost and dramatically faster.

When to choose air cargo
High-value goods. When goods are expensive relative to their weight, the air premium is a small percentage of total shipment value. Spending an extra 2,000 AED on air freight to get 200,000 AED of inventory 3 weeks faster is almost always the right trade.
Time-sensitive restocking. When you are out of stock and losing sales daily, the cost of 25 days of lost revenue exceeds the freight savings.
Samples and test orders. When evaluating a new supplier, speed of feedback matters more than freight savings.
Small commercial shipments. Under 200-300 kg, the cost difference is often negligible once you factor in sea freight minimum charges and LCL consolidation fees.
When to choose sea freight
Bulk and heavy goods. Furniture, building materials, machinery. Air freight at these volumes is prohibitively expensive.
Regular monthly imports with predictable demand. When you can forecast demand 30-45 days ahead, sea freight savings compound into meaningful annual reductions.
Non-time-sensitive inventory. Seasonal goods ordered well in advance, raw materials, any category where arrival date flexibility does not impact operations.
The hybrid approach
Most experienced importers do not choose one mode exclusively. They run air for urgent replenishment and sea for planned inventory builds. First orders from new suppliers go by air for faster quality feedback. Subsequent orders shift to sea as confidence grows.
Our cargo shipping services support both modes on both the China-to-UAE and China-to-India corridors. Switching between air and sea on a shipment-by-shipment basis requires no new setup.
Factors most importers forget
Insurance cost scales with transit time. Longer transit means longer risk exposure. Cargo insurance is recommended regardless of mode but is particularly important for sea freight.
Working capital is tied up during transit. If you pay your supplier before shipment, your money is locked for 3-7 days with air or 25-35 days with sea. For a 100,000 AED shipment, that is either one week or one month of capital unavailable.
Customs clearance is the same regardless of mode. The documentation and duty process does not change based on how goods arrived.
Making the decision
If the cost of delay exceeds the cost difference between air and sea, choose air. If it does not, choose sea. Calculate both for your specific shipment and choose based on your numbers.
